North Carolina Flood Disaster

Details and photos of the 1999 Flood of Edge Comb County, N.C. Where Correctional Officers from Wicomico County, M.D. volunteered to assist fellow law enforcement personnel and local citezens in the recovery from an unbelievable flood.
I'll show you FREEDOM HILL,A community established by freed blacks in 1865 and Incorporated as Princeville in 1885. There was little to nothing left of this historical community where good people lost more than thier homes.

Right click and zoom in for a better look.

The entrance to Princeville, one of the few things still standing.

Some on said the higher elevations received only little damage. (???)This one was all but under water.

This pic was taken from the top of Tarboro Bridge, I am about 35 feet up from the water and during the flood the water was 6-8 feet over this bridge. Oh by the way there is a park and road about 10 feet under the water you see!

There was I am told a nice trailer park here. What you see is what is left once they all hit the tree line. Even up close it only looks like one row. The red arrow shows direction of travel.

What you see here is a casket. About 200+ caskets came out of the ground, some smashing into trees, emptying the remains into the floodwaters.

If you zoom in you can see a red line marked where the water leveled off.

We observed several of these house-sitting sites. Yes the house is sitting on top of the car.

From what I can tell this shed belongs in the back yard.

Can you tell how high the water got here? Go ahead make a guess and a wish.

Edgecomb County, NC set us up in the best accommodations we ever had. I don't know why inmates complain about the sleeping conditions , all the comforts of home.

I would like to say thanks to Wicomico County, The Sheriff of Edgecomb County and the Governor of North Carolina for allowing us to support our fellow law enforcement officers and helping us to show that correctional officers can do more for the community than detain their law breakers.
A special thank to the NC ALE Agents and DMV Police for allowing us to work with them as fellow law enforcement officers not just COs.
